I received your letter in Sept, when we got back from a vacation in Colorado. I did serve on the Kennebec in the fifties, as a radioman and when I was transferred to Kodiak, AK, I was a Third Class. I remember the Kennebec came into Kodiak while I was stationed there. It was good to see some of the old crew that I knew back then. I was really surprised to get this letter from you after all these years. I stayed in Alaska for 18 months and then transferred to a Minesweeper Divn as the Flag Radioman. I got out of the service in 1954, and went to work on the Union Pacific RR as a Telegrapher. I guess my time in the service really helped. I retired in 1992, and have been traveling to the Southwest every winter. I would have liked to make it to the reunion, but we can't this year. It would be great to hear from some of the guys if they are on the internet. Lives in Troutdale, OR. updated with life membership 01/24/03

Yes, I did serve aboard the ship in 1964. Both Andy Mariana, from Philly, and myself came aboard at the same time. Fresh out of Electricians "A" School in San Diego, we came aboard at Hunters Point, San Francisco. In October of that year I was transferred to the USS Sacramento, AOE-1, in Bremerton, Wa. The Kennebec was in dry dock, under the Oakland Bay bridge, when I left. I enjoyed those months in San Francisco. We were only out of the bay a couple of times. I recall that the laundry and the electricians shop was located in the aft part of the ship and with the single screw we sort of waddled through the water. I remember Andy, Roger Higgins, Walt Wilk, Art Garcia, Chief Radcliff and Chief Alfred Baker, who was EM 1st Class, while on the Sacramento. I was discharged in 1968. While on the Sacramento, we made 3 West Pacs and spent 36 months at sea. We did replenishment with the Kennebec in 1966. Of course trips to Hong Kong, China, Japan, Korea, Philippines and Australia ( two trips for Coral Sea Days) were some of the rewards. I will retire from Citgo Petroleum this year. With some welcomed free time, I will make every effort to make your reunion in 2004. The "E" Division of the Sacramento has been holding reunions the past 5 years. Alfred Baker has made a couple of those. I'm sure he lives in Bremerton, WA. Again, I thank you for your letter. A fellow shipmate." Lives in De Witt, IA. updated 03/20/03

Aboard Kennebec from Mid 68 cruise until decommisioning in Vallejo. I was a fireman apprentice in 68 and made all my ranking aboard the ship. Left as a BT2 in 70 and went to the USS Ajax and served again under Erv Remelee, who they put in charge of the Boiler Repair Shop. He left before we went back overseas in 71 but, ironically, was in charge of career counseling at Treasure Island when I was discharged and counsuled me on re-enlisting. We have been in touch somewhat but not in the last 15 years. Ran around with Bob Sharpnack, also a Boilerman, who I regretfully have to say , died of complications from stomach cancer in the late 70's. John Kucher and I do keep in touch, when we can, and I will try to get in touch with him about the web page. To Chief Remmelee, Cosgrove, and anyone else in B -Division, Hello from Jake. Anybody remember Red Foraker? Married to Sandi since 1970. From Sandi, 11/24/01: "He entered the hospital on November 8th, was diagnosed with cancer on November 10th and passed away Friday, November 23 at 2 am. The brief connection he made with old shipmates made him very happy. He was one hell of a man, and this has devastated us all.
