William "Bill" Machupa, MM1 Aboard 1966 for five months. Pleasant surprise to receive your message. I would be most honored to become a member in USS Kennebec Association. My service aboard, however, was a short stay. I was (TAD) from her sister ship the USS Mattaponi (AO-41) to fill a vacant MM1 slot until a permanent replacement arrived. Nonetheless, I see the Kennebec every day as her picture embraces my office wall along with two DD's I served with. Only picture missing is the Mattaponi . I have not found one as of now (webmaster note: I sent Bill to a web-site with photos of USS Mataponi). I did see a list of oilers on your web but she was not among them. The reunion sounds great. My wife and I go to Vegas on average of three times a year and have visited Laughlin a few times so any place is all right. Dates no problem if I have a little lead time. updated 10/15/01 Membership EXP 03/04

Aboard 1963-66
Reunions Attended: 2002, 2004
I served on the Kennebec from Oct.63 through Nov. 66 (except for a few days in the TI Brig) You may remember me as SMILEY. A few days ago Dave Hawrey called and turned me onto this site. Thanks Dave for trackin' me down. In 1988 I retired from the Fort Wayne, IN Police Dept.after 20 years plus change. Since then I've been collecting pension checks and doing a lot of driving jobs. Probably logged over a million miles on my butt. I always was best at skating and had some hiding places even Frank Holden didn't know of. Anyway, now that I've been found I hope to hear from some of you old trippers. Married for 33 years with 3 kids and 2 grandkids. Thanks again for the web site. I'm not a big web surfer but it is the best I've visited and I plan to spend much more time on it. Hope to see you at the 2002 reunion. Lives in Albion, IN. updated with life membership 08/27/04.

He put up a valiant fight and will truly be missed by myself, our children and grandchildren...He was honored by a military honor guard, playing of taps, and the 21 gun salute at the funeral today. He was truly grateful that you took the time to contact him about the association and the several reunions we were able to attend..." Click Here to view Larry's obit in PDF.

I lived in San Francisco for awhile and moved back to Chicago after the service. I live in a nice apartment (studio) out in the beach area of San Diego. The rent is reasonable, but I don't have room here for a roommate. It is an SRO apt. Are there any pics you can buy of that old oiler so I can frame one at home? I use to have an old Zippo lighter with the ship name on it. I can't even find a cap with the ship name and number, either. I have nothing but a copy of my DD-214 that has the name of the ship I had duty on....is all! Ugh! Keep in touch.... After living and working in such states as Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota and, California, I have decided to stay here in Southern California. I now live in San Diego. I lived here for 23 years, now. After all these years, I am still single. I never married. No children. I have tried to remain single....in my young, old age of 60+ I am doing just great. YES, I do get lonely. I enjoy walking, reading, going to movies...all kinds..and visiting various websites of interest...history, art, and sailing. Also, operas. I do volunteer as a "mentor" to help children learn how to read, and also volunteer at a Veterans facility here in San Diego. I do not own or have any pets. Although I love both, I am not allowed to have any where I reside...just a small studio. I live in a beach community, Pacific Beach, and I live only about a mile from the ocean!!! I would just "love" to go to the reunion in October to see other shipmates I worked with aboard the old WW2 Oiler, USS Kennebec (AO-36) I remember some of my former mates I was aboard with.
Let me hear from you Tuleyites......soon......What's up?" Lives in San Diego, CA.

Reggie J. "Reggie Mac" McLaughlin, SFP2 Aboard 02/63-06/66. Dick, I was so surprised this weekend when I went to my mail box and received a post card from you. A little bit about me and the USS Kennebec. I boarded her in February 1963, right out of Boot Camp. I was discharged in 1966 right after the West Pac Cruise you describe in the web site today. Although I remember it ending in May, instead of June 1966. But, I could be wrong about that. I left as an SF2. I can't say as I remember you, but then again if we talked about it, it may come back to both of us. I would really like to join the Association. Please let me know what I need to do. There is only one guy I have kept in touch with over all these years. That's Mike Brenzikofer. He also was a ship-fitter. He lives in Aurora, CO. Man I could go on and on here, but I won't. This really excites me, and I hope I can find out more about all the guys that served while I did. I'm in the music business and go by Reggie Mac. Please keep in touch. I was attached to the ship from April 1968 to December 1969. My rate was CS2. Remembering names is a little tough, but those faces who could forget. The time on board brings back fond memories, not all of them are good, but I wouldn't replace my days on the USS Kennebec for anything. In 1990 my wife Sharon went to a family reunion which was held at a YMCA Camp on the Kennebec River in Maine. My neighbor Eddie Hortinela told me after I new him for 10 years he was also on the Kennebec. My wife Sharon and I are looking forward to seeing shipmates from the past. Aboard May 1969 - April 1970. When I reported aboard, I was assigned to the 1st Division. During unreps, I worked as a signalman on Rig 1. After returning from the 1969 deployment, I went TAD to YN "A" school in San Diego. I returned to the Kennebec for a few short months, working in the Ship's Office, then because of the impending decommissioning, was transferred to the Ashtabula (AO 51). I think of the Kennebec quite often, the people I worked with in 1st Division and Operations Division, and continuously look for information in the retirement newsletter on a reunion.
